US Visit Visa Preparation,Submission,Interview and Rejection – The complete experience – Part2

Read Part 1 first
The Experience
So once the initial steps were known, here’s what happened while I actually went ahead with the process.
1. Photos
I had a photo, but the requirement was that it shouldn’t be more than 6 months old. It should be 2 inch by 2 inch. I went with my mom and took the photos. I had given instructions that no beautification, like removing marks and moles should be done. The studio guy told no such modification would be done with the US visa. Even they know – faking can bring trouble. I was charged 100 bucks for 2 photographs copied on to a CD without physical prints. My photo turned out to be terrible as I was wearing a white shirt and I had to take it again from Perambra, another 40 bucks.
2. Fee Payment
I paid the MRV fee and service charge at HDFC bank in Palaraivattom. I had problems withdrawing cash from various ATMs and finally made the payment in cash. The process at the bank was simple, only requirement was passport front page and page with address. They gave the receipts promptly. But as mentioned earlier, I could use the receipt for appointment only after 3 days as the day I paid the fee was a Friday.
3. Filling form DS160
It begins here at – http://ceac.state.gov/genniv/
This was the ultimate frustrating experience. I have filled in various online forms, was always keen on beta testing a lot many web as well as desktop applications. This turned out to be the most frustrating experience of online application filling. Of course, of course, it was all written. “We are facing problems, so save often and the usual crap that says we are having a crappy site, mind it this is not a hobby project like my jaledit that takes donations or Dataone Quick Usage Finder which I give for free. It’s a government web site from the globe’s ultimate country in Information Technology. Shame on US, it was not one day or two days, it was on an on going crucification that lasted for many days. You start by selecting your consular location, uploading the saved form, if you have saved till what you filled. The main usability issues and my comments on filling the form are listed below
- Why can’t the consular location be saved. Why should the user select the consular location again and again. Logic says that it can be saved.
- If some thing is saved, the usual logic is continue from where you saved. But in this case, you still have to go through all the pages, and in between the server emits a session timeout message. 3 days I struggled just to fill the forms saving at each step. It was not only a test of patience and endurance but it was wasting time on no fault of yours. The estimated burden as per site is 75 minutes, and what happens when it fails at the last page 10 times or more. You can imagine the frustration level.
- One of the first confusions, during the form fill up is what the surname and given Name is. My old passport had a flower brace where the surname and given name were together listed as my full name Sunish Issac. The new passport has no surname and the given name is Sunish Issac. So what’s to be filled would probably be the first confusing entry. The mess up can actually be attributed to the Indian passport application/passport verification authority. They should have given correct instructions on what each field is. Anyways in the US way of doing things, the way to go ahead in my case is Sunrname should be my entire name Sunish Issac and given name FNU which means First Name Unknown. This becomes important as the surname is used while restoring the saved application. There’s also this option of asking, have you used other names, not sure if baptism name counts.
- Passport Book Number apparently doesn’t apply to Indian passports. The file number is not what is required.
- Travel info does not ask specifically for your travel purpose. you just have the option to say TOURIST/PERSONAL TRAVEL VISITOR(B2). This is where I was in trouble, if the visa officer does not ask you for your exact purpose of travel, we can’t say and they can’t know from the application. The principal applicant wording is a bit confusing, but clarified on the application form itself.Person entity paying for the trip was confusing for me as my aunt promised for one ticket and she sent the sponsorship affidavit. So paying for the trip means just travel expense or the entire trip. I guess I should have written that my aunt pays for the entire trip.
- Are you travelling with a group or organization is another confusing question, but clarified in the form itself. Me travelling with my mom is not equal to group or organization.
- Present Work/ Education/ Training Information is the next part. We go to list the primary occupation, for me its business. I was not sure what I should write in the column, present employer or school name – confusing. Can I select either of these ? I don’t know I selected School Name. Then there are other questions including monthly salary if employed. But when you run your own business, I assumed I’m not employed.
Here are some interesting questions that are part of DS form 160
Have you ever served in, been a member of, or been involved with a paramilitary unit, vigilante unit, rebel group, guerrilla group,or insurgent organization?
NOTE: Provide the following security and background information. Provide complete and accurate information to all questions that require an explanation. A visa may not be issued to persons who are within specific categories defined by law as inadmissible to the United States (except when a waiver is obtained in advance). Are any of the following applicable to you? While a YES answer does not automatically signify ineligibility for a visa, if you answer YES you may be required to personally appear before a consular officer.
Do you seek to engage in espionage, sabotage, export control violations, or any other illegal activity while in the United States?
Do you seek to engage in terrorist activities while in the United States or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities?
Have you ever or do you intend to provide financial assistance or other support to terrorists or terrorist organizations?
Are you a member or representative of a terrorist organization?
Have you ever ordered, incited, committed, assisted, or otherwise participated in genocide?
Have you ever committed, ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in torture?
Have you committed, ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in extrajudicial killings, political killings, or other acts of violence?
Have you, while serving as a government official, been responsible for or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom?
Once the DS160 is done, you end up with the confirmation page. I have the pdf printer ready on my computer, so its always easy to have everything printed as a pdf file. Of course there’s an option to send the application as pdf by email. That’s it,
4.Taking appointment
Visa Appointment related primary link is https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/ApplnForms/RegularUser.aspx
You can know the earliest available interview date from https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/ApplnForms/EarliestDate.aspx
These are the requirements as per VFS site
- Passport – you just need the expiry date passport number
- Receipt issued by HDFC Bank
- CEAC barcode Number
- Relevant documents based on visa class
- E-mail address
And here’s how it goes,
1.Residence/Language/Visa Class
First, State of residence should be given, I gave Kerala and the Language of interview choices were English, Telugu,Tamil,Kannada,Hindi and Urdu. I gave Malayalam as I filled in my mom’s details first. ( There’s an important point to be noted here, which I’ll describe later on, but the point is I should have given English as I was accompanying her)
Again purpose of travel – I gave Tourism/Family Visit/All other purpose. See the exact purpose of travel is not asked. It can be avoided as its already asked in DS160.
2.Earliest Interview dates – figured out that the available date is dependent on whether your previous visa appointment was rejected.
3.Visa Fee Receipt details
First and Middle Name: Obvious, but confusing, shoudl be given as in the HDFC receipt.
Surname: Indian style ?
Passport Number:obvious
HDFC Bank Receipt Number (Barcode No):Youc an find it on the receipt.
Date of Birth:You have the option to select month, year and date
Re-enter Mother’s Name:obvious
4. Application details asks for Phone no., email id, CEAC barcode number and courier address. If Bluedart does not serve your area, you will have to pick up the courier, ie visa stamped passport from the courier office. That is, if you get the visa after the interview.
5. Coworkers travelling together – selected the option as my mom will be attending the interview with me. Up to 6 applicants can apply as a group.
6. Appointment confirmation is the final step before the interview, you have the option of having it mailed as pdf and also to download it immediately. After that you are led to a page that has guidelines and interview letter.
The options that I have mentioned is applicable only to the Chennai consulate. Other consulates might have different procedures.

US Visit Visa Preparation,Submission,Interview and Rejection – The complete experience – Part – 1
Apr 23
Disclaimer: Whatever is written is entirely my personal opinion based on my experience in applying for B2 Visitor Visa at the Chennai consulate. The intend of this post is primarily to help applicants and to convey my sentiments about the interview process. I would also be happy if the visa officers do read this as I have some suggestions for them. I’m no lawyer and I’m not responsible for your use or misuse of the information provided below.
The Background
It all started, with the upcoming wedding of my maternal cousin in the US. The wedding is on may 14th. My aunt (I’ll refer her as TK) was in the US since 1975. She also happens to be my god mother. She wanted her siblings one elder sister (my mom), one younger sister, two younger brothers for her daughter’s wedding. TK, I presume, like most people who settle in New York and Mumbai(Bombay) consider those cities as the ultimate safe and complete place for living.
TK had applied for permanent residence card for her younger sister and their family in early 90’s. All but the elder son of my younger aunt got the chance for permanent citizenship. But nobody except for my younger cousin went to the US. My uncle a who’s a psychiatrist in the Kerala government service and who got the best doctor award was never keen to go to US. When my aunt applied for visa the situation was different. His elder son was trying for MD and since he was above 21 was denied permanent resident status.
End of the day no one except for my mom was interested in going to the US for the wedding. My mom due to her age, health conditions and communication issues( can’t speak English) would not be able to travel alone. So I was asked to accompany her. The wedding is on May 14th 2010 and these decisions were mostly taken in Dec Jan period.
The Preparation
Being on to computers since, 1987, I did some research on the net about the visa process. I ended up on http://immihelp.com on many searches. I must admit that they are doing such a wonderful job in providing authentic information in a systematic manner. The forums frequently has experiences posted by real people who went for the interview. I will add some things in this post that were missing on the immihelp web site.
The official links of importance are given below
This of course could be the start https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/USIndia/allaboutvisa.html
So here’s my conclusion,
-
We need a non immigrant visa.Myself and my mom are temporary visitors intending to visit for family/pleasure/tourism purpose. So the visa category is Tourist B2.
-
Our consular district is Chennai as we belong to Kerala.(States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and the Union Territories of Lakshadweep islands and Pondicherry are serviced by Chennai Consulate.)
-
We need to have a photo meeting the spec as per https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/USIndia/photospecsnew.html
-
Fill the form DS160 (http://ceac.state.gov/genniv/) apparently introduced since January 2010, part of paperwork reducing act. Among various other details, you’ll use your digital photo, passport number and finally get confirmation page with CEAC barcode number.
-
Pay the visa Application Fee (US$ 131 currently Rs. 6288) also called the MRV (Machine Readable Visa) fee and VFS service charge (Rs.374) at the designated HDFC banks. The official page is at https://www.vfs-usa.co.in/USIndia/applicationfee.html. But you end up on this page http://www.vfs-usa.co.in/ApplnForms/FeeDetails.aspx if you search for MRV fee. This link has wrong info as the exchange rate has been changed to Rs. 48. IMMIhelp is accurate and has the real details at http://www.immihelp.com/visas/fees.html. Important fact is that the MRV fee can be paid by DD payable to “US EMBASSY – VISA FEES” from almost any bank other than cooperative banks. But the service charge can be paid only at the designated hdfc branches. In Kerala, the branches are only in Ernakulam. Its easier to pay both the fees at the HDFC bank than taking a DD and then going to HDFC bank as you can do it both in one shot. A photocopy of the first page of the passport is also required at the bank for all applicants. The bank would hand over 2 copies of the receipt, one for us and one for the consulate. The consulate copy is the blue one. The amount is non refundable, irrespective of whether you get the visa.(More on this later). The receipt usually gets activated only after 2 working days. Which means you can take an appointment date only after 2 days after payment.
to be continued in part 2…
Lots of issues, looks like I lost my google rank because of issues related to clean URLs, most pages were inaccessible. Finally problem solved, not sure how it was done as I don’t have access to the server.
Fenugreek worked ?
Apr 8
I’m not very sure what’s happening, but here’s the latest lab report with lipid profile.
| Date | Sugar | Total | TG | HDL | LDL | VLDL | LDL/HDL | chol/hdl(<5) |
| 03-04-2009 | 81 | 202 | 197 | 43 | 120 | 39 | 2.79 | 4.69767442 |
The total cholesterol has come to the least value in the last 4 years of my stats. But the HDL has gone down to the same value of what it was before. The other parameters to be taken into consideration, 1) There was no exercise 2) Its lent and there was no meat or fish intake. The TG and LDL level has come down but not significant.
My mom who was taking medication also started taking Fenugreek, for the past one month and she stopped taking medicine. Ironically, in her case almost all values shot up. We plan to wait and test for another month and if there’s no luck she would have to continue with medication. Now the question is whether the effect of fenugreek reduced in the case of people who already took medicine.
| Date | Sugar | Total | TG | HDL | LDL | VLDL | LDL/HDL | chol/hdl(<5) |
| 12-11-2008 | 94 | 144 | 154 | 48 | 65 | 30 | 1.36 | 3 |
| 04-03-2009 | 106 | 172 | 158 | 49 | 92 | 31 | 1.877551 | 3.51020408 |
| 03-04-2009 | 91 | 258 | 249 | 40 | 168 | 50 | 4.2 | 6.45 |
Our main means of public transport is probably bus and train. I do enjoy these travels, as long as I have a seat and its not too cramped. The main advantage is that it slows down our thought process, letting us literally see thing that we would have never noticed.
Travel speed might not be proportional to thinking speed, but you also meet people. I recently happened to meet an old friend after 17 years and through him I got the contact details of another, who was even more of a close friend. It gave immense joy and I did save some cash with that travel.
Reading Influence – The Psychology of Persuassion and various other books, made me think about various influences. I just came across this phenomena while working as a cashier at my business premises. I tend to give more attention to those who are close by even if they were not the first to ask for a slip. And that inner knowledge is probably the reason why people never queue up in India. We know that we get more attention when we are at proximity with the listener. Physical proximity has more influence than loudness, I guess.
Is this thought silly, I don’t know, but most of what is written in big psychology books are all things we all know well.
I don’t know precisely when I started to have high cholesterol levels. But one fine day in 2005, I felt I was gasping after a walk and I had this intuition that I had cholesterol. Went for a blood test along with my mom who already had started taking medicine, to find that I too had it. I did all to reduce weight, which was actually under control and my BMI was right.
I tried different stuff, controlled my diet, no eggs, no red meat and observed lent. I also ensured had lot of fish with Omega 3 fatty acids. The maximum of total cholesterol levels that I could bring down was 230. In between it had gone up to 305. With a a good familial background of cardiac arrest, my father and grand fathers’ from paternal and maternal side died of heart attack. My mom and dad had high cholesterol levels, but I never took medicine. In between when I ate lot of sardine and dates , the HDL levels had gone up but its very difficult to identify what exactly make a difference, because you never just eat one type of food. I never went for medicine as I was told that once you start to take medicines you can never stop it as the cholesterol levels do shoot up after stopping.
I recently came to to know that fenugreek can bring down cholesterol levels and it was not very difficult to try. Thanks to Fr. Paul Kynickal for his advice. The prescription was to put some fenugreek 15 or so seeds in to a small glass of water at night and drink the water and fenugreek seeds in the morning with an empty stomach. I tried for one month and here’s the result. There were no massive food restrictions and no exercise and of course no other medicines.
Here’s the American Heart Association recommended values http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4500
| Date | Sugar | Total (<200) | TG | HDL(60 above) | LDL | VLDL | LDL/HDL | chol/hdl(<5) |
| 03-02-2009 | 84 | 248 | 174 | 43 | 170 | 34.8 | 3.96 | 5.77 |
| 04-03-2009 | 98 | 246 | 202 | 68 | 138 | 40 | 2.03 | 3.61 |
The main difference is the increase in HDL levels. I’m continuing the treatment and I’ll post the next results within a month. Now with no non-veg, the difference should be more. A bit of walking is also planned.
Side effects : I felt a craving for sweets, apparently fenugreek brings down sugar levels too!
Here are some other benefits of fenugreek, that’s not confirmed
but found on the net.
- Discalimer :I’m not responsible for authenticity of the statements below and the consequences of excessive use or abuse of fenugreek
- Fenugreek seed is widely used as a galactagogue (milk producing agent) for lactating women, I don’t know the consequence for men
- Fenugreek is mainly used as digestive aid. It is ideal for treating sinus, lung congestion, reduces inflammation and fights infection. source : wikipedia
- Supplements of fenugreek seeds were shown to lower serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein in human patients and experimental models of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyecridemia (Basch et al., 2003).
- It reduces blood sugar level.
- Reduce menstrual discomfort
- Minimize symptoms of menopause
Does money make you happy ?
Feb 22
Deep thought might definitely tell you otherwise. I’ve been browsing through the Happiness Project Blog for a long time.
I read Joel’s arrticle about intrinsic and extrinsic happiness at inc.com. I probably have a lot of intrinsic happiness in helping out to solve tech problems. With the recent cash crunch I do feel that more money doesn’t mean more happiness, but lack of money definitely brings down my spirits..
The only time I get these days is early morning, that too if I get up. With a kid on the block, sleeping late, that too is difficult. Still hoping to get more time by getting up early.
